Outer Skin - save your expensive material

Hi

I'm not to familiar with dual extruder and how it operates in cura, as i'm waiting for the kit to come out for UM2.

But i was thinking today as i was printing with bronzefill, if there will be a way with dual extruders to be able to print the outer layers with bronzefill and the rest with PLA to save on cost? Is the feature there to be able to do this?

    The idea is good... Somewhat...

I guess you could maybe achieve it by making a duplicate of your model, scaling it down slightly, and printing it inside the original, in a cheaper filament?

However, there is more to copperfill than the outside look, you would loose the heavy weight of the print, which I guess (at least to some) is a big part of a copperfill print?

I print at 20% fill, the reason is to add weight to the print. I have minimal 3 outer layers (1.2mm). And I make sure each line in the layer sticks to eachother. So the object outside can be sanded a lot without breaking through the first outer shell line.

Yeah I get the weight thing but I'm printing something to go on the wall and it's just for the looks. Weight is not a factor.

I wasn't just thinking of thinking just for bronzefill. I find woodfill lacking in strength. So the strength could come from the inner and just have a woodfill skin.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
