  1. Hi,

I'm constantly finding new bugs/improvement points on the Ultimaker 2.

I just noticed that ABS is set to 280C but there seems to be no way to change it (?).

I just reported this bug to the new ScretMarlin firmware github place:

"In the Ultimaker 2 menu structure, you can select ABS as material.

    From MATERIAL->SETTINGS->ABS

The temperature is then set to 280C.

However, the firmware seems to have a limit (I'm guessing at 260C since that is the official highest in specifications in User Manual) whenever heating the printhead.

So when you do MATERIAL->CHANGE it first brings up:

    "Heating printhead for material removal"

as it comes up in temperature (to 260C I guess)

    it eventually stops with an:

"ERROR - STOPPED Temp sensor contact support@ultimaker.com"

I'm guessing this is simply about changing the ABS temperature to a lower value?

(It would of course be extremely useful to be able to add other materials and also change temperatures for both ABS and PLA)"

  2. Hi,

I often demo 3D printing at different events and we bring Ultimaker 1 or now recently started toting the Ultimaker 2 around.

First, we just used a big blue IKEA bag. But it doesn't look too good, you cannot carry it comfortably and it doesn't shield it from rain/snow.

The Ultimaker 2 has a smaller footprint in total but it is a little heavier.

Recently I found and bought this "Base Camp Duffel XL" bag which can barely fit the Ultimaker 2 if you remove the spool holder and wiggle a bit to get it inside. Then you can even carry it on your back!

It's better than the IKEA bag, but it's still not ideal.

    IMG 1960

The printer is just too heavy/cumbersome to carry, especially since you also usually have rolls and tools to bring.

I would like to have a roller/bag combo which can fit at least an Ultimaker 2 (UM1 would also be nice) in it, can be rolled (on wheels) *and* that would have straps to put on your back to carry.

    Something similar to this:

    http://www.uspatriottactical.com/catalog/product/gallery/id/60587/image/41909/

but bigger and with wide openings so it's easy to put the Ultimaker inside.

Does anyone know of such a bag?

    Preferrably available in Sweden

    Thanks,

    Daniel

  3. We've had our Ultimaker 2 for a couple of weeks now and about 100 hours of run time. It's a really nice unit.

(My longest print job is still running, about 41 hours hours non-stop now...)

However, I have experienced strange things such as prints being stopped a while into the print and just hang. I think the OLED interface has also hung/crashed one or two times.

My suspicion is that this occurs only when using SDHC (4GB) cards that I recently bought (2GB SD cards are getting less and less available actually so it's sometimes hard to find them).

I recall from previous threads that Daid recommended against using SDHC cards and that we should stick to 2GB "old" SD cards only (formatted for FAT16 I presume).

However, in the recently released 1.0 Ultimaker 2 User Manual it only mentions "SD" cards and nothing explicitly that only standard 2GB or less SD card can be used. So it's not clear.

If indeed SDHC is not supported it would be nice if the firmware could catch this and display an error message instead of discovering this mid-print.

And also add it to the manual for clarity.

Who knows this for sure? I guess Daid does :)

    Thanks,

    Daniel

  4. I forgot to mention a pretty relevant thing...the object is pretty large, so in the error scenario I have sunk it into the platform with "Cut off object bottom (mm)" by 92mm.

The model needs a lot of internal support structure.

It seems to occur at many "cut off" heights.

The error occurs at the second layer.

However, when I slice the full model (i.e. when not using "cut off.."), the error is not there.

I have checked it it Netfabb and the model is "good" (no holes/bad edges etc).

  5. Hi,

I think I've found a bug in Cura 13.10 (sliced with Ultimaker 2 profile).

The head wanders off into infinity, see this screenshot:

  6. Did you secure the rods somehow for transport? Otherwise you should make a video on how to get them back without bending them. We used a clamp together with care and proper distance metal pieces and rubber because during shipment our y rod had slipped out of the "c block" and needed a lot of force to get put back into place.

I guess this is a test you might not have done...ship it across the world and back to yourselves ;)

I love the machine itself, we demoed it on TEDx Stockholm earlier tonight: http://t.co/eNQNH4qckV

  7. Hi Nancy, really nice that you caught it on video! Is it reproducible if you restart the print and if so does it happen at the same spot? Would be really nice to know. I hade a very similar problem in April which I suspect *might* be a firmware bug...but I never had time to re-run that print. Check the thread here: http://umforum.ultimaker.com/index.php?/topic/1989-big-frisbee-print-shifting-in-y-and-x-halfway-in-print-firmware-bug/%20Sorry%20for%20no%20line%20breaks%20but%20my%20Return%20key%20just%20stopped%20working....

  8. Really nice to see a first UM2 "in the wild" :)

I saw it in Birmingham at the TCT Show last week, really really nice machine. But there was still some work being done with new Cura etc.

I think that the pre-release versions of 13.09 are the only ones supporting correct settings (build size etc) for Ultimaker 2 right now:

    http://software.ultimaker.com/Cura_closed_beta/Cura_13.09-PreRelease.exe

    http://software.ultimaker.com/Cura_closed_beta/Cura-13.09-PreRelease2-MacOS.dmg

Keep us posted on the printing!

If anybody knows an object that would need cooling from both sides that does not work well with standard UM1, please paste the link to such an object for Nancy to try :)

    Cheers

    Daniel

  9. Hi Daid,

I wonder if you could include the change log (or link to it) of changes done between each new Cura release? (Change from/to each of the earlier releases)

Preferrably directly in the user interface in Cura.

For example now the latest Pre-release of 13.09, I would like to know:

    - What improvement/bug fixes has been made that affect the original Ultimaker

    - What changes has been made to support the Ultimaker2?

    - What improvement/bug fixes has been made that affect the dual extrusion upgrade?

Also, the firmware that is packaged with each Cura release might be different from another Cura release, but it seems a bit hard to tell because currently it says "Upgrade to Marlin firmware", but not what "revision" of the firmware....

I'm wondering whether it would have benefit to my as an original Ultimaker owner to "upgrade" through the "Upgrade to Marlin firmware" från 13.09 Pre-release or not.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity... :)

    /Daniel

  10. I think there's some kind of display bug in the new 13.07 SupportTest1/2 versions.

Oftentimes, the time estimate after slicing shows as "45 minutes" and not the proper time.

I cannot find exactly what triggers it, but it seems consistent at a particular set of parameters for a particular model.

The model prints fine, it's just that sometimes it shows the calculated print time as exactly 45 minutes (even though it might be a very long print).

    Has anybody else experienced this?

  11. If you have a slicer that supports "large" stl files (like Netfabb; I don't know about Cura), then it really helps to:

    - Use a 64-bit computer

    - Have a lot of memory and a fast CPU

    - Only import binary stl files (they are a lot smaller/more efficient than ASCII stl files)

    From the Netfabb FAQ:

Q: What is the maximum file size I can handle with netfabb?

A: You are not limited by your file size but only by the RAM of your system. A minimum of 2 GB RAM is recommended.

    Again, from Netfabb (system requirements):

    CPU & RAM

For a fluent workflow 2 GB RAM and a 2 GHz Prozessor are recommended.

Generally: The bigger and the more complex the 3D file is, the more RAM is required.

For the Automatic Packing add-on at least 4 GB RAM are required (the higher the

    better).

Ian, I can try slice something for you in Netfabb for Ultimaker which I have.

Although it was a really long time since I used it so I don't have the proper configuration. Somebody here posted a snippet of a new config though (might have been Owen?).

    /Daniel

  12. I have multiple 3D printers with different capabilities. I have now registered only our Ultimaker, but we also have a Delta Tower, capable of printing up to 60cm tall objects.

Can you add so that it's possible to add multiple printers?

Also, I have materials that is not listed in the materials section; PLA/PHA blend and Colorfabb XT (amorphous copolyester). Can you add the possiblity of adding materials yourself?

    Thanks

    Daniel

  13. I somewhere that most (even commercial) slicers has a limit at around 300MB, I can't remember where now.

But I guess that Netfabb (Professional) needs to be able to handle more, how else would the big printing houses like Shapeways etc be able to pack the big trays full of hundreds of models?!

    /Daniel

  14. I tried this (in Cura 13.06 and later).

It seems very slow...it takes about a minute to draw the Demo_World-->Player map and then when I select an area and click import, the window goes black and nothing happens.

Daid, did you try this recently?

    Is there any documentation?

    Thanks

    Daniel

  15. I also found some really nice blog posts from Ultimaker users regarding printing with Laywood:

    From Jeremies post http://www.tridimake.com/2012/10/shades-of-brown-with-wood-filament-via.html:

"Trying to find the proper temperature ranges

The filament seller recommends temperatures from 180 to 245°.

On my side, I failed some prints when going below 200° or above 250°.

In both cases the filament is not fed appropriately out of the nozzle. A good range for me was 205 - 245° (updated values!), as it results almost in the same range of brown shades in my opinion. So no need to take some useless risks.

Indeed, when the temperature is too high, be prepared to clog your nozzle and fail the print because the wood starts to burn. Reciprocally low temperature makes extrusion too difficult to get a proper flow.

Note: I should have tried lower speeds, I printed all these objects at 70mm/s, it may be too much since I usually stay at 60mm/s with regular filament.

    "

and lots of other good laywood tips here:
