  1. Weighed an empty 750gr spool from ColorFabb today: 254-257 grams, I really didn't take a photo of this, but I can surely do if prompted.

My was manufactured sometime this year and had nGen on it, maybe they changed spools or it differs between different filaments?

Or my scale is off, thats possible but not likely by 20 grams.

I unwinded remaining filament to weigh spool and have put filament back to spool, will re weigh on different scales tomorrow.

    how accurate is that?

I'm mainly using S3D and I weighed an print today that S3D estimated to 227.49 grams, it actually weighed 224.x grams. And of course you need to fill in the correct data in your program. I use the data provided by filament manufacturer and it usually works very good.

  3. Welcome!

I wish you the best of luck and I'm certain that you will be as hooked as the rest of us!

Happy printing and I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work, it's nice to see/read what other people are doing, unfortunately I don't share as much as I'd like to, but thats another story...

  4. I'm a bit ashamed for not getting back as I promised, at the time I was all in for printing, then life came in between ?

I'm a bit split in my feeling, cant really decide if I'm to blame or if the filament isn't better.

Somehow I thought it felt really nice and smooth while printing, but ended up having to raise my multiplier to 1.05, but I still had some issues with blobs and I was hoping for more regarding surface quality.

I think that my nozzle got partially clogged during this time, probably because of ColorFabbs HT and nGen that I enthusiastically jumped to and from a bit to much, and then back to X-PLA. I ended up having to set my multiplier to 1.05 with all filaments.

Now I'm a bit more used to my printer and I am starting to test out each filament one by one, as you should do from the beginning ?

Thats a lot of words for saying that I don't really know.

I ordered the Textura Flare samples as well, laying here beside me together with all other stuff ?

Please get back with your experience!

    /Micke

  5. Thank you for an very informative post! Much appreciated.

I’ve bought an 3rd party PTFE coupler (or something similar) that claims to withstand 295C. So far it has proven to work.

I guess I’ll give it a shot and compile my own firmware, if it’s really as “simple” as downloading firmware from github, edit line 166 and upload it back to my beloved printer I think I will manage ?

I don’t know all the right terms for this, but is there only the firmware that can be upgraded? So if I compile my own firmware and then later on you guys at Ultimaker releases a new upgrade (the one that typically is made from Cura) my compiled one will be overwritten?

Autodesk is pretty much a pyramid scheme now. avoid at all costs

Don’t know what a pyramid scheme means, but they sure know how to squeeze the most out of people’s wallets. I too hate subscriptions, i totally refuse using/signing up for those programs.

I’m using Fusion 360, wich is an autodesk program, for free as they offers/offered that for free to small businesses and hobbyists. I’m dreading the day they start charging us too.

I’ve been searching for an alternative for years, so to speak, and come up with nothing I get the right fealing for. When I had my Windows machine I had Solidworks for a little while, and if I remember right the charged nearly $10.000 for it so thats out of my leauge for sure.

I have an iPhone X which should be able to have better scanning capabilities due Face ID , but it seems no app is using it (or Apple don't have APIs for it and don't allow 3rd party apps to use the Face ID functions)

I don’t think apple i letting anyone play with their Face ID for numerous reasons. And with our safety in mind, that’s a good thing I guess.

  8. Maybe somewhat OT but I never really succeeded with eu makers PLA with my previous printer. Some colors worked ok at .1mm and at low speeds like 30mm/s. Thicker layers or faster printing never worked for me, suggesting that higher temp would do it but I had no luck with raising the temp.

Come to think about it now when @Link said that the surface of filament was rough, thats how I remember it too and it is very likely that my problem was due to the friction in the bowden tube. To bad that printer burned up, it would’ve been interesting to explored further.

I also thought it was a shame cus they had some really nice colors.

  9. Ahh, now I get it, what you meant by “my waco”

But seeing as you are a mac person......sorry. i just get whats best

Haha, no need for sorry, I’m quite happy. I even have a friend who drives a Ford and is happy with that...

Thats a really nice picture, adding to your story about the girl who was sad.

So.... if a 9yr old can do it.....well. So can you!

    No pressure, lol

some people think just because its newer it must be better

Agreed to 100% Funny thing though, a never ending circle. People upgrade -> complain -> upgrade -> complain

shareholders expect two releases a year

Haha, yes, agreed. There is something rotten in this world...

Well I guess I could go on but I think we have similar thoughts.

In the near future I think I'll take your advice about zbrush and practice practice practice and forget about scanning all together. In the end the ultimate goal is to make my own models from scratch anyways.

Just out of curiosity, and maybe it's obvious, but on the train you mentioned, you had a laptop to your wacom? I've been thinking if it would be an advantage to use an iPad pro, but I guess zbrush doesn't come in an iPad version. And of course the little thing called price tag.

  11. I know what you mean, and no judgement from me but I gave up all that when I changed to Mac. At the time I wasn't sure how to handle the freeware on a Mac and then it I tried a "different way of life" and try to focus on the programs I buy.

For me, it got kinda out of hand, when you can have anything you want to eat all the time you often end up taking a bite of everything and not really enjoying it or even remembering what it was you just ate. And then there is the anxiety, but I wont go there ?

Once you've done this a few times, it doesn't take very long.

Yeah, my problem is that I've tried a gazillion times but never succeeded, so still waiting for my first time “doing it” ?

Thank you for inspiring and informative posts, It sure is impressive work you do!

some day I will get past that threshold...

  13. Thank you @cloakfiend

Everone wants to make money I guess.

I was hoping for another app like 123D Catch, I was almost certain that there would be a lot of apps by this time that scanned even better. Well well...

Regarding photoscan; Its not a good thing for me to be needing to lay my hand on the scans afterwards, I just dont get programs like Z brush, that I currently have installed as a trial. I feel like an total and complete idiot.

I’ve seen a few of your models in other threads and just want to say that I’m stunned, do you do this for a living?

  14. Not sure this helps, but this reminds me of my trials and errors.

I’ve only had my printer for a month and only used Simplify3D, but thought I would give Cura a try. It behaved just like you describe. When I pressed start print via USB the print head immediately started “printing”, without homing and raising bed. I tried a few times but it allways seemed to be the same.

I have very little patience for this kind of things so I continued using S3D. Then yesterday I gave it another try, i was lurking around the settings and changed the G code flavour (is that what’s it called) to Marlin, in machine settings (not at my computer now but I think that’s where the setting is) don’t know if that was it but after that it worked, at least yesterday.

Also I recommend trying Cura 15.04.06

I’m trying to get to grips with cura, and when I read something like this it makes me wonder.

May I ask why you think “such an old” version would be the candidate?

There are no Kangaroos in Austria.....

    HAHAHAHAHAHA ???

    Sorry about that.

I guess we suffer the same fate then, where I live we have had maybe 10mm rain since mid May and the warmest year in 260 years (or so the papers say).

  17. 1 hour ago, Smithy said:

UM tech sheets say, you should store it <50% humidity, so I think 40% should not be a problem. But the humidity currently here in Austria about 75% is too much. So I moved my tests with PVA to a dryer period ?

He hom seeks shall find, maybe something for me to consider ?

I thought everybody in Australia had air conditioner ?

It's to high humidity here in Sweden this time of the year as well.

Good luck with your printing! And congratulations to your UM3, wish I had one too.

That is all dependent on your environment within your worker space and local. That is why one must try options. What works for dry climes does not always work in humid ones or worse, extremely humid ones. It all depends on how you keep your worker space.

But as a guideline, if you have a humidity of, say 40%, how long until you need to dry it?
