I have a question about the handling when filament really runs out. I have currently a print running and know that I will run out of filament tomorrow afternoon. I think when the sensor detects that there is no more filament left, the end of the filament is already in the Bowden tube.

I am asking me what's the best way to load the new spool? Just leave the rest in the Bowden and load the new one, is probably the worst idea I guess. So unload of the rest will not work anymore, therefore open the Bowden at the feeder end, take out the rest and then load normally?

Or is it better to catch the moment before it is really out and pause manually and unload / load as normal?

    Thanks!

I can only share what I know others to have done; simply load the new roll with the feeder latch loose and push the new filament in as if loading an empty Bowden tube. Secure the feeder latch and select continue and it will push the remainder through as used.

The only issue I see with this practice is until the material that was left in the Bowden tube is consumed retractions will be a skewed.

Having shared this; I would likely remove the material in the Bowden tube and then you will need to feed the new material all the way through the Bowden tube to the Print Core because selecting continue does not feed the filament through the Bowden tube.

@Shadowman , it should be fixed indeed. The LED's bugfix was not listed among some other fixes because the full list would be too long to share. One bulletpoint saying '- And more general (smaller) bug fixes are implemented' should be added to the list.

    Hi SandervG

I loaded the new S5 firmware and here are my comments as posted in another thread.

”Ok; I just installed the latest firmware in the S5 and the leds remain “on” even when there is nothing printing.

They seem to act exactly as they did prior to the firmware update.

While printing the leds are bright relative to the intensity setting you select using the slider. I have the pulse when the print feature turned off and the light to turn off when not printing selected and yet ..... once the print stops the leds continue to glow albeit dimmer than during the printing.”

    yes.

Filament can get ground up for a variety of reasons. One such as you mentioned is getting bound up in the spool and when the feeder tries to pull on it, it will grind a bit. Just good to do a bit of cleaning every now and then is all.

    Cool... I appreciate your insight.

Having had to abort  a print so that I can clean out the feeder, I can say that the prints are now going into the recent history. Dunno why it missed that first print, but it is starting to work now as expected.

Curious; why are you having to clean the feeder?

For your information; my S5 stopped a print twice stating that it was out of material when the PVA filament became bound on the spool and could no longer be pushed through the Bowden tube so preemptively I opened the feeder after the print expecting all sorts of dust and chips but it was clean.

By the way; have you loaded the new firmware?

    Which feature are you missing?

You can have the LEDs always on, you can have the LEDs always off and can have the LEDs on during printing and off when in idle mode.

Have you confirmed that these lighting  options are available on the S5 with the latest firmware? I think they have always been a feature on the 3 and as I recall; you have both.

I ask because you could not have the leds completely off before unless you turned the printer off at the switch.

Sounds not so good that it will be in the near future.....

Sounds good, due the fact we already paid for the aluminum build plate, it is a great step forward that Ultimaker provides us with adhesions sheets for free in the meantime until the build plate is ready to ship. ?

    Huum... Interesting.

In my opinion this is another example of being sold that which was truly not able to be sold.

The words “the test results are promising” pretty much says it all.

This was a significant part of the S5 story as presented by Ultimaker as such a significant part of what we all paid for.

I did not purchase into a development project.

    Now......

Considering that all of us that are awaiting the aluminum plates are already registered with Ultimaker can I assume that Ultimaker will be preemptively shipping us build plate adhesion sheets immediately? I would add to this that a glass build plate should be included too; very simply because materials/prints requiring build plate adhesion sheets could make those that don’t a pain in the arse to remove as such a stop gap means to swap between two build platforms needs to be shipped.

In my opinion, and as much as I appreciate the Ultimaker team throughly testing and making design changes prior to shipping, I purchased Ultimaker’s most advanced thoroughly tested printer (as they marketed it) showing me and speaking of features such as the advanced aluminum build plate as such; this delay makes clear that in part; I/we prepaid for a vision and a hope rather than a relality.

Not good; even if only speaking for myself, I purchased the S5 (and I suspect is the case with the others that purchased the S5) did so in a large part, based on the new thoroughly tested features and associated technology.

To be very frank; I am troubled by the information as shared as there is an unquestionable and very clear difference between “developed” technology versus “to be developed”. I was told thet the delayed shipment of the aluminum build plate was as the direct result of Ultimaker m’s need to ramp up the production of the aluminum build plates whereas I now clearly understand that there is not a viable “developed” aluminum build plate ready for production and furthermore; no assurances of when or even if it will become a reality.

    This is the Ultimaker S5 that I purchased;

Yep, of course we do have a complete list of changes but it isn't polished up for publication, i.e. many changes have a poor description and will raise more questions than they answer. Internally that isn't a problem since we can click a link to the full bug tracking system for more details, but that won't work without an Ultimaker account.

In my opinion the v5.1.7 release is a great step forward to an even more stable S5 machine. Just to give an impression on the number of (tiny) changes from 5.0.19 to 5.1.7:
    * The printer application had 199 tickets of which 110 marked as bug fixes.

    * Cura Connect had 79 tickets of which 39 bug fixes.

Misleading here is that many bug fixes are fixes on other changes we made and that were never in an official release.

A few of the other note worthy bug fixes that didn't make it into the release notes:

    - Fixed several problems where sometimes the filament retractions were off at the end of a print or when pausing; the filament was retracted too far or not far enough, causing problems in priming the next print.

    - With Active Leveling the first layer was sometimes too thin. Other accuracy improvements were made as well.

    - Fixed a tiny ooze blob at the end of a print where the print core was hovering too long on the object.

    - Fixed a memory leak in the web service.

    - And lots of other bugs that handle edge cases that happen rarely but will make the printer more stable (like starting an XY calibration with only 1 material now reports an error, better handling of internal errors, etc.)

But, looking at the whole list, my opinion is that Ultimaker shouldn't publish it in this form. Even for me, as one of the developers, it is a confusing long list.

Even without a detailed list, your time spent explaining as you did is appreciated.

     Thank you

Not easy when it happens the first time you see it. I too am used to it now, but it is a bit of a shellshock to see it for the first time and bringing on the fear of bricking a printer....

I understand as I was the same; the first time I let it sit all night concerned that it was akin to a bios reflash.

    Hi,

yesterday, the Cura PPA was updated, and today Cura was able to detect the S5 again. Yay!

The printer offered me a firmware update from 5.0.19.20180622 to 5.1.7.20181023.

Idiot me chose to install the fiormware update. It says now:

    for the past five hours!

    What the crap is happening?

    Relax...

Turn the printer off and restart the FW update and you will be fine

After reading some of the reports I inquired with our experts and I understood that if you use the pop-up notification there is a (small) chance that the firmware upload might stall. If you use the menu instead, there isn't. That may be counter-intuitive, but I would recommend to not use the notification but the menu instead.

Good news is, this bug is fixed in the new firmware. But in order to benefit from this, you must install it first. (Via the menu.)

It can be found in the release notes, almost at the bottom:

    • Fixed crash when initiating the firmware update from the notification popup

For now, I reverted to the "testing" firmware version 5.0.12.20180507 and everything is working again.

I'd like to re-update to 5.1.7 once this issue has been addressed for the faster active leveling and new analytics page, but for now 5.0.12 will have to do ?

    Thank you for the information

Hi, we just launched a new firmware version for the Ultimaker S5. New firmware for the Ultimaker 3 will follow quickly.

If you are curious about the release notes? Please follow this link

    Thank you SandervG

I just looked at the release notes and do not see the led turn off feature mentioned; you said it would be within this FW; was it simply not listed?

    Hi,

I updated my S5 firmware this morning and can no longer initiate any prints.  This problem occurs with both Cura Connect and by USB.  Please see these short videos demonstrating the problem.

    https://youtu.be/JBMOnftKnEQ

    https://youtu.be/AgLHio3XYRU

    https://youtu.be/dBhvlkA3F0Y

Is there a way to downgrade the firmware in the meantime?  We have deadlines to meet and cannot afford to have our largest printer nonoperational.

    Ugh...

Having an S5 I remain very interested; please keep us updated.

    Thank you

Here is the profile that I have had very good dimensional results with. The ringing in this one is no worse than the stock "fast" profile, at least for me. It's good enough for the parts I print, where dimensions are far more important than looks. If you find any tweaks that improve upon this, please let me know.

    DIMENSIONAL PROFILE.curaprofile

    Thank you again.

I will try it in a few days as I am in the midst of a multi day print.

As I was pointed to information by @Smithy in this thread:

I am wondering how much of this issue may be caused by this and what can be done other than being 'router stoopid' like myself.

As long as the printer is managing the IP address by DHCP it can and often changes during reboot as well as when the DHCP lease expires. In therory when the DCHP lease is renewed it should use the same IP address however, this often does not happen. The lease time can be altered, meaning, extended but the easiest way is to go into the router and do a MAC IP assignment.

The purpose for the DHCP lease time is so that roaming devices always have access to your IP address pool. If this did not happen sooner or later nothing could connect because there would be no available IP addresses.

    In any case;

Once you do a MAC IP assignment within the router the DHCP query created by the printer will see this and the printers IP address will remain constant; effectively a static IP address.

Exactly the same as me mate and what I have reported in this thread previously.

What I meant is stability with cura connect over wifi connection to printer, have you fixed this yet or not @SandervG? Also can you comment about how the firmware upgrade part of the printer will behave post new update? will you be making this more intuitive?

We both have made this situation known and in my speaking with others directly some; I dare say all are affected.

At least one person has simply deferred to using USB and only visually monitoring; thus option is not acceptable to me on such a printer. I have printers that cost far less that this situation was known from day one hence aceepted.
