There is a timeout on post editing. It's against link spam, which posts harmless messages and edits in links days after. All that work to increase google ranks. It's a shame, but it's needed.

There is no error - the edit button just goes away, either after some timeout or after somebody responds to a post.
Administration Control Panel -> Board Configuration -> Post Settings -> "Limit editing time"
