Posted · Adding a second extruder to Tevo Tornado standard profile

I am using a Tevo Tornado with the supplied Cura 4.8.0 profile for the printer. The profile works fine except that it is limited to only one extruder.  Can I modify a file setting somewhere to allow for a second extruder?  I am planning on using a mixing print head, so I will need only one nozzle and heat block.  I know I can create a customized profile for the printer, but the standard one supplied by Ultimaker is working so well I would like to be able to simply add another extruder to the drop down box in the "machine settings"...  as the profiles for other machines have.  Thanks

No one replied to my post, so I kind of abandoned this site as not active... sorry!

The forum is very active. But it is the official forum for Ultimaker, so in general there are more Ultimaker users here who are less likely to know how to modify "third party" printers.

You would have to make some file alterations.  Since the printer would be a total custom you would need to copy the files over every time you upgrade Cura to a new version.  Not difficult.  I keep my custom profiles together and copy them over when needed.

@tdbinns and @EngineeringGuy - Did you get the second extruder added?

I understand that this is a Ultimaker site, but since  the Tornado is almost an exact clone of the CR-10  I asked my question on this site.  As supplied, the printer runs Cura v3.8.0 with Marlin v1.1 and Repetier Host v2.2.2. My explorations have led me to believe that the only change I would need to make is to change the Extruded setting in the Marlin firmware from 1 to 2, and it should accomplish my objective.  I purchased a controller card and display so that I can experiment with firmware without messing up my printer and so far it seems to work, so I guess I answered my own question.

Yes, it is the Ultimaker Forum but all users of Cura are prospective customers.

There is a modification of the definition files that adds an extruder train, then there has to be an extruder file for that new train.  Doing it that way will let Cura (any Cura) know that you have multiple extruders.  I had already altered the files for a tarantula.  The Tornado files are in the zip file.

Copy "tevo_tornado.def.json" to the ...\resources\definitions folder.

Copy "tevo_tornado_extruder_1.def.json" to the ...\resources\extruders folder

    tevo_tornado_dual.zip
