Cura not slicing bigger .stl files

Hi,

I have a problem with Cura. I'm trying to create lithophane models. Models up to 500MB are sliced without problem. Now, I have one lithophane sphere model with size 970MB. Cura open the file without the problem but after clicking "Slice" button the slicing process will not start. Only "Slicing..." appears but no progress bar. I tried to leave it on over the night, but nothing happens. Nothing sliced and no error message.

Someone knows the answer?

System used:

Latest Cura 4.10

iMac 27", 2020

Core i7, 128GB RAM

Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB

macOS Big Sur 11.5.2

Thank you

Petr

I was going to take a look.  My computer isn't beefy enough to open that in any software.

Mine (9900k, 32gigs of ram) opens it (takes a moment to load) but chokes around 90% of autoslice. Mesh tools shows a warning that the model may not be watertight. Disabled auto-slice, tried to fix the normals but that just locks up cura on my end. Sorry. That's one big-ass litho lol.

Prusa opens it relatively quick but shows 79849 auto-repaired errors. That's probably why it won't slice. Huge non-manifold model

    Thank you.

This is a good hint. I will try something...

Here's the prusa repaired one. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TYvvdlfJzwtyAFlfCGtmk2jRVsbb6aGP/view?usp=sharing I couldn't get it to upload here. Took too long. I'll tinker with it some more on my end.

    And here is .stl.....maybe 🙂

    globe.stl 917 MB · 5 downloads

How did you manage to slice it

I also has a stl of more than 900MB and same issue

    Hey @JeremiaL,

Welcome to the Ultimaker Community 🎉
Wow! I'm super curious what you are trying to print. 🔍

You can try a more elaborate mesh fixer like https://myminifactory.github.io/Fast-Quadric-Mesh-Simplification/.
You will lose some of the detail but I bet that you 3D printer wouldn't have been able to pick it up anyways.

    Good luck 💪

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
