Transferring print profiles to next version

Hi,

I would like to upgrade from 4.11 to 4.12 but there is one structural problem with new Cura versions. There is a lot of complaining about it, but Ultimaker seems to neglect that. What's my problem? How the f* do I transfer dozens of printptrofiles to the next version without several hours of work doing exports (and retyping the profile name for each profile) and imports on my new version and/or the next/new computer?

I currently have a Creality CR6-SE and I'm considering a new printer. (Actually I want to start a 3D print shop.) I really do like the Ultimaker printers, but looking at the troubles I have with each next version of Cura.... and/or a new/additional computer? Well... stone age practices. Really hate this part of Cura. Is there a simple solution??? If not I'm going for a Prusa3D for my next printer.

I asked Mr Google, but there seems to be no smooth solution. (Or didn't I ask the right question???)

It automatically does that (or well, it should...) . I don't know why it doesn't for you, but maybe I can find something in your log files that indicate what is going wrong.

One thing to pay attention to is that when installing a new version of Cura, it will ask you if you want to uninstall the previous version(s). If you choose to uninstall the previous version, the uninstaller will ask you if you want to remove the settings of that previous version. If you let the uninstaller remove your settings, there is nothing left for Cura to upgrade to the new version.

 

DO NOT let the uninstaller remove your settings if you want to use your settings and profiles in the new version!

READ what the installer is asking you instead of just "clicking through".

The installer has never asked me if I want to uninstall the previous version or if I want to keep my settings.  It just installs a new version of Cura.  I would like it to automatically carry my material and machine settings over from 5.4 which is what I'm stuck using.

👍 Just install the newest version and you'll be good to go!

 

The first time you launch a newer version of Cura than what you were using before it automatically copies the settings from the newest older version you'd used (i.e. if you've used 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 then you install 5.8, it'll copy the settings from 5.5) and upgrades them if the settings format has changed since that version.

 

You don't even need to uninstall previous versions if you don't want to, multiple versions can happily live side by side (though unless you're like me who has six different versions installed for helping people on the forums who use older versions, you'll probably want to uninstall older versions). I'm pretty sure the uninstaller in current versions doesn't even offer to delete the settings, it just leaves them there.

either I'm really missing something or something is messed up.  None of my printers or material settings or profiles have ever been migrated to a new version.  I just tried installing 5.8.  I also have 5.7 and 5.4 installed, with all my used profiles in 5.4.  I'm now contemplating importing them one by one, and also making new machine profiles as well as print profiles, or trying a different slicer.  On a side note i read somewhere that cura now has a max volumetric flow setting?  I couldn't find it.

Go to the Cura configuration folder (Help > Show Configuration Folder) and go up one level from there (or in Windows it's %APPDATA%\cura\) - there should be different folders for different versions. Close Cura, then delete the folders for any version newer than 5.4. Launch 5.8 again and it will copy the configuration folder for 5.4 (and update any configuration files whose format has changed, but will keep the settings).

Okay well that worked without even having to delete the folder.  I just uninstalled all other versions of Cura besides 5.4.

 

Then I remembered I only upgraded in the first place because I thought that volumetric flow rate was a thing...
