Question for the people who attended: What's the thing that impressed you most? Any really cool new materials, technologies etc.?

Ich hatte vor einer Weile schon mal im Wiki des GarageLabs geguckt, aber keinen Ultimaker gesehen, anscheinend bin ich blind :-P Edit: Ich habe gerade auf der Facebook-Seite gesehen, dass der auch noch ganz neu ist. Dann brauche ich mir doch keine Sorgen um meine Augen zu machen, hehe. Bist du dort aktiv oder kennst dort Leute, Marius?

3D prints for gardening! E.g. spray nozzles and valves for a custom-made, modular hydroponics/aquaponics system. Or DIY selt-watering systems. You could even assemble a miniature system and show at your booth.

Interessant wäre herauszufinden, ob dieses Problem aufgrund einer falschen Firmware für den Ulticontroller besteht oder eine mechanische Ursache hat, deswegen würde ich mal ausprobieren, über USB zu drucken. Sollte das Problem dann nicht auftreten, stimmt irgendwas mit dem Ulticontroller nicht. Womit druckst du, dass ständig Verstopfungen auftreten? PLA oder anspruchsvollere Materialien wie WoodFill? Bist du dir sicher, dass es Verstopfungen sind? Wenn du beobachtest, dass Underextrusion auftritt, kann es auch daran liegen, dass der Material Feeder das Filament nicht richtig transportiert, die Temperatur zu hoch ist (z.B. PLA bei 250°C) oder Filament-Durchmesser zu sehr schwankt.

Ian, have you watched that documentary "Make Me A German" about a British couple who moved to Germany for a while and tried to live as Germans? There's this scene where the guy uses his mobile phone at work to send a text and everyone's super shocked and, like, "nope, we never ever do this at work, how do you ever get anything done at work when everybody's texting all the time". It's probably still floating around the Internet in case you missed. It's pretty interesting. From my limited experience working in Germany and abroad, there's a greater disconnect between private life and work in Germany. Your job is a means to an end, first and foremost. There's no need to identify with your company. The fact that you work is important, not what you do. This entails that people don't care that much about their colleagues because that would mean mixing private and professional lives. And professionalism means pragmatism. Enthusiasm or any non-money-generating activity is seen as unprofessional. Also, from the 60 people in my engineering class at least 50 were extremely introverted nerds who are not used to small talk or human interactions in general when sober (and only marginally better when drunk). People will thaw eventually, it just might take a few years.

One little thing to add (because I spent 20 minutes troubleshooting before I realized this): Lines not touching can also be caused by the "Spiralize" function that you forgot to turn off again after printing a vase. Aaaaaah!

I feel really guilty for not participating but I spent the whole month printing more important projects (so many birthdays...). I'd love to see the MPC continue, even if participation could be better... Anyway, I didn't attempt this but I guess that the spiralize feature could be crazy useful for a very small set of gears. Is that your secret, Sander?

But you could quite easily build a sous vide machine with the temperature sensor, the heating element and the PID controller to make really tasty eggs :-)

Du benutzt also den Ulticontroller mit dem Ultimaker Original? Tritt das Problem auch auf, wenn du versuchst, über Cura per USB zu drucken? Bestand das Problem schon immer oder erst seit einem Firmware-Update?

I voted! (on friday but saw this post just today :-P )

Urgh, headaches, they are the worst. My sympathies. Took me ages to figure out what caused mine and how to deal with them. Are you printing PLA or ABS? ABS fumes are known to cause headaches and nausea as stated on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), e.g. http://www.plasticsmadesimple.com/DataSheets/ABS_MSDS_GP.pdf.You should only ever print ABS in a well-ventilated room. PLA fumes seem to be harmless as long as you only melt, not burn PLA. I don't think the Ultimaker itself is causing the headaches. I think the side panels are made of PMMA which doesn't emit harmful fumes (and IIRC smells like gummy bears when melted). The other parts are so small that I'd rather look for other culprits first. Anyway, I'd stop printing for a while, keep your window closed at night and see if your headaches disappear. But keep in mind that any number of things in your room could cause these headaches, e.g. any newly-bought furniture (sofa/mattress a primary suspect), your new gigantic TV screen, paint on the wall, chemicals in the carpet, fire-retardant chemicals in the curtains, washing powder fragrances, maybe even some kind of pesticide used before you moved in.

Done! Yeah, another thing accomplished before 10 a.m.! Kinda scary that I somehow turned into a morning person...

Oh, die haben sogar einen Ultimaker! Danke für den Hinweis! Möglichst Samstag, evt. Freitag. Ein Ulti-Evening am Montag so wie in den Niederlanden ist aufgrund der größeren Entfernungen nicht sinnvoll. Es sollen ja alle die Möglichkeit haben zu kommen!

Wait, your underpants are big enough to enwrap an Ultimaker? Are they reeeeeeeeeally stretchy or did you drink that many delicious Bavarian beers that you gained a lot of weight?

Der Ort ist noch nicht ganz geklärt, allerdings wird es definitiv in einem FabLab stattfinden. In den nächsten zwei Wochen sollte der Ort aber feststehen.

Update! Es geht voran mit der Planung! Eine Frage von Sander: Sollte der Vortrag lieber auf Deutsch oder Englisch gehalten werden? Oder ist euch das egal?

Eine Übersicht der häufigsten Druckfehler findest du hier: http://support.3dverkstan.se/article/23-a-visual-ultimaker-troubleshooting-guide (allerdings auf Englisch) Wenn du wirklich genaue Ergebnisse haben willst, versuch mal mit 20mm/s zu drucken. Das ist allerdings sehr langsam. Außerdem schrumpft PLA beim Abkühlen um ein paar Prozent, was normalerweise kaum auffällt, aber gerade bei kleinen Teilen zu Problemen führt. Dieser Effekt ist leider auch nichtlinear, so dass nur Ausprobieren und evt. ein klein wenig größer Zeichnen bzw. Nachbearbeitung hilft. Wegen des Zeugs, was oben aus dem Hotend rauskommt: Das liegt vermutlich daran, dass die Hotend-Teile nicht fest genug zusammen gebaut sind und dort Plastik austritt (siehe hier, ein bisschen scrollen bis "The hot end of my Ultimaker is leaking. There is plastic forming on top of the aluminum heater block."). Da man das Hotend allerdings auch zerstören kann, in dem man die Teile zu fest dreht, würde ich dir empfehlen, das zu ignorieren, solange es nicht so viel ist, dass es vom Hotend runtertropft.

Das Thema Sponsoring würde ich gerne erstmal vertagen, bis ich eine Antwort von Sander habe, ebenso das Thema "Raum anmieten". Das Konzept "Ulti-Evening" sieht nun mal vor, dass das Event in einem FabLab oder ähnlichem stattfindet, deswegen würde ich mich erstmal auf die Suche nach einem geeigneten FabLab konzentrieren. Falls ich mich vorher unklar ausgedrückt habe, tut es mir leid. Der Hinweis auf die Make Munich ist gut, weil ich bisher nur ein FabLab in München kannte, es aber anscheinend zwei gibt. Danke! Außerdem ist diese Messe auch bestimmt für den ein oder anderen hier im Forum interessant! Zu deiner GEMA-Frage: Sobald Musik in einem öffentlichen Raum abgespielt wird (und sei es noch so leise!), ist man verpflichtet, das der GEMA zu melden und Gebühren zu zahlen. Führt man eine Veranstaltung durch und macht keine GEMA-Meldung, muss man nachher nachweisen, dass zu keinem Zeitpunkt in irgendeiner Form Musik abgespielt wurde, und das ist leider ummöglich. Das gilt nicht nur für Veranstaltungsräume, sondern z.B. auch für Arztpraxen, Ladengeschäfte, Autowerkstätten oder Kindergärten. Theoretisch ist es sogar so, dass du, wenn du eine laute Privatparty in deiner Wohnung feierst und damit die Straße vor deiner Haustür beschallst, dafür GEMA-Gebühren entrichten müsstest. Da es erfahrungsgemäß gar keinen Spaß macht, sich nachträglich mit der GEMA rumzuärgern, ist es unbedingt notwendig, sich vorher darum zu kümmern.

Ich freue mich über deine Ideen, aber leider gehen diese Vorschläge zumindest für den geplanten Ulti-Evening in die falsche Richtung, weil sie den Aufwand für das Event stark erhöhen und auch den Charakter des Events stark verändern. Das sind alles Dinge, die für ein allgemeines User-Treffen in Betracht kommen, aber nicht für einen Ulti-Evening. Wichtig am Ulti-Evening ist der Community-Gedanke. Das Ganze soll in einem FabLab oder ähnlichem stattfinden, damit es dort stattfindet, wo sich 3D-Druck-Enthusiasten treffen und gemeinsame Projekte machen. Es geht nicht nur darum, einen Vortrag anzuhören, sondern auch ums Machen, ums "hey ich hab ne Idee, gib mir mal schnell das Werkzeug xy", was einfach so nicht in einem angemieteten Raum möglich ist. Zudem sind die Kosten durch die Anmietung eines Raums leider nicht nur die Miete, sondern auch Technikausleihe+Versicherung, nicht zu vernachlässigende Stromkosten, GEMA, etc. Das läppert sich erfahrungsgemäß ganz schön zusammen und sollte erstmal vermieden werden. Ich habe diverse Projekte mit Sponsoren gemacht und weiß wie viel Zeit das kostet. Meiner Erfahrung nach dauert Sponsorensuche mindestens drei Monate (eher sechs), bis die zuständigen Personen die Verträge unterzeichnet haben und das Geld da ist. Da der erste Ulti-Evening in hoffentlich weniger als drei Monaten stattfinden soll, ist das also momentan keine Alternative. Sponsoring ist auch an sich ein kompliziertes Thema und meiner Meinung für einen Ulti-Evening ungeeignet, da es sich dabei um ein Event von Ultimaker handelt. Würde man ein allgemeines Community-Event veranstalten, sähe die Sache anders aus. Ich kann das aber nicht entscheiden und werde dazu Sander befragen. Die holländischen Ulti-Evenings kommen ohne zusätzliches Sponsoring aus.

Oh super! Das klingt schon mal vielversprechend. Ist dort Platz für ca. 30 Leute + Ultimaker?
