Extruder Shift

Hi,

I have this strange problem. After long duration of print, extruder shifts in X-axis direction. Please refer image. The cylinders shown by red lines are original lines and yellow line shows cylinders after shifting.

Can anyone help me.

First of all: check your pulleys and ensure they are properly tightened

Did it show in the layer view? No? Then it's most likely not a cura problem (but hardware; tighten those pulleys!)

Sudden shifts in only one axis are almost always fixed by tightening the set screws on the pulleys. There are 6 pulleys on the X axis (not 4) and the 2 on the short belt are the most likely that are slipping (the one on the stepper and the one on the other end of the short belt).

The UM Original usually comes with a second set of spare set screws that are shiny (the originals are black). The shiny ones are better although most people are fine with the black ones but you have to tighten the hell out of them.

If you don't believe me mark your pulleys and shafts with a permanent marker so you can see if the pulley slips.

Less likely causes are high friction in the X axis or rubbing belts against the case but those usually cause gradual shifts - not sudden shifts like this.

I am using motor which has flat shaft, and pulleys are properly tightened, no sign of slip. This problem is happening almost after 30Hrs. I think this may be because of stepper driver. (May be motor is stalling in between).

If your stepper driver has an overcurrent and temperature protection you might have run into the temperature protection. Maybe improving the cooling of the stepper driver could solve your problem?

Still this is extremely common cause. Mark the shaft and the pulley with a tiny dot with a permanent marker.

If a limit switch signal is triggered you get the same sort of pattern where you get a sudden shift in one layer.

How is the friction of your two axes? Push them around by hand with power off. Maybe you need a little light oil? Maybe belts are too tight?

Could as well be that the printed material curled up, hardened and the nozzle hit it, making the stepper skip steps.
