Posted · How to connect the heatsink fan for E3D v6 hotend on Original+?

Hey guys,

I recently bought an E3D v6 hotend(3mm bowden) to print higher temp plastics and everything has gone perfectly except for the last part where I need to hook up the small heat sink fan to the motherboard.

I haven't been able to find any instructions on how to do this as the fan is 12v and the supply is 19v(white motherboard, the UM2 version if I'm not mistaken). Is anyone able to provide me with an idiot-proof set of instructions to hook the fan up so I don't damage the fan or MoBo?

Thanks.

I think the white UM2 board in your UMO+ is 24V, not 19V...

Seems weird to me that there wouldn't be a 12v output SOMEWHERE on the UM2 board?

The cooling fans for the E3D hotend needs to be always on (at least when the hotend is hot, which pretty much means always), so an always-on 12V rail, is really all you need.

    If not:

You could put 2 x 12v fans in series on your 24V rail, though its quite a hacky solution, and I don't know where you would put that additional fan...

You can also use a DC setpdown/buck to get your 12V... I have done this to get an extra, external, 12V rail on my UMO, and it worked fine.

...But that does not in any way make it an idiot-proof approach with the UM2 power supply.

Does the 24V version of the E3D come with a 24V fan as well?

I thought it was only the heat cartridge that was different?

It also seems like @Dalemaunder already bought his hotend... AND he mentions the fan being 12V

This is what the E3D website tells me:

    1 x 100K Semitec NTC thermistor

1 x Heater Cartridge (12v or 24v depending on version)

    1 x 30x30x10mm fan (12v or 24v depending on version)

1 x High Temperature Fiberglass Wire - for Thermistor (150mm)

    2 x 0.75mm Ferrules - for Solder-Free Wire Joins

    - See more at: http://e3d-online.com/E3D-v6/Full-Kit/v6-3mm-Bowden#sthash.UPUTqEqA.dpuf

So it looks like if ordered the 24V version the fan is also 24V.

I think my version is 12V fan with a 24V heater if I am not mistaken but I ordered it 1.5 year ago.

Alright... I didn't notice that... Always assumed the fans to be 12V.

It does however not help much, if he already bought the kit :/

Ah, fantastic, I bought the 24v version but I assumed that was referring to the heater cartridge and picked up somewhere that the fan was 12v, I didn't even think to question it. I do indeed have a 24v fan.

Thank-you very much for the replies, 2 days of being concerned about how to do this and it was all because of a false assumption, hooking it up to the pins pointed out by ultiarjan had it working perfectly in seconds, I feel silly now :D

I am about to upgradequate my UMO+ with E3d v6 hotends too, I just need to create a mount for a part cooling fan. Thanks to the postings here I know how to hook up the heatsink fans for the E3d. My question is, are there any firmware or g-code changes I need to make to get the heatsink fans to run continuously while printing? I somewhat doubt that the UMO+ can automatically detect when the fan is connected but everything I've seen online is only about wiring the fans or making modifications that are outside of my scope.

    Hmmm....

Not sure about what you are asking exactly, but for the 24v hot-end cooling fan there is nothing to do. You just have to take the power either from the connector mentioned above, or from the 'Fan' output on the other side of the board like here:

In both case they are always 'On', so the fan will always run.

Alternatively, you can use a 5v fan and connect it to the fan output in middle of the board, but then you will need this firmware to enable it if you have a recent board.

    These are the simplest solutions.

Thanks Amedee! That's exactly what I needed. I'm planning to use the 24v connector next to the power input, identified by Ultiarjan above. If I understand correctly it is always on by default, even with nothing plugged in, so it should literally be a plug and play install. I'm reusing the ultimaker heater blocks and such so the only real wiring will be to splice the heatsink fans together since I have two heads. Woo-hoo! I love it when products are well designed for modifications.
