Cura 2.7 Spiralize Outer contour start from a given height

Hi everyone.

I have a model (a vase downloaded from thingiverse) and I would like to print the bottom part of it with a given filling percentage (e.g 20% for 2 or 3 centimeters) then I want to move to spiralize mode.

I expected to use the "Per model settings" and "infill mesh" or something similar but unfortunately the spiralize parameter is not present.

Of course I can play with bottom tickness parameter... but this is not exactly what I want to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure spiralize was in the "per model settings" before, I think at least in 2.5. And it should be imho as combining can be usefull.

For example here I used it that way

    https://ultimaker.com/en/community/40389-combine-spiralize-and-normal-printing

@nallath do you know if it's been taken out on purpose?  or is it a mistake?

edit :   Diego, you can ofc install cura 2.5 on the side just for this

Yes, the spiralize setting did get changed from being per-model to global. I can't remember now why that was done. I don't remember it being my idea to do that and git blame says that Tim was the last person that touched that setting.

One restriction with using spiralize with multiple meshes is the obvious one that you can't have two separate models side by side and spiralize them both (or spiralize one and not the other). The meshes have to be stacked vertically so that only one mesh occurs on each layer. But that is what the OP above wants to achieve anyway.

Perhaps it should be changed back to allow it to be specified per mesh?

Yeah. It may need a comment on how to use it. But IMHO it should be set back to "per model"

Well mine is a very special case but also in my opinion I prefer to have this capability "per model".

Thanks both for the fast response and thank ultiarjan for the solution.

I forgot to say that in the meantime you can just edit fdmprinter.def.json in your Cura installation and manually make that change.

    Very interesting. I will check.

    Thanks again.

I have this problem, looks like it never got changed in cura. Could someone tell me the basics of how I edit the fdmprinter.def.json in Cura installation please? What software do I use? Any pointers very much appreciated. I hate that they took this out of per model settings, there seems to be no good reason for it.

The file will open and can be edited in any text editor (but not a word processor).  Those posts were 4 years ago.  It looks like it would still be possible.  "magic_spiralize" and the current setting is "settable_per_mesh": false.

I have printed models with solid base and spiralized upper portions.  My system was to slice the model twice and cut and paste a gcode file together.   The XYZE locations need to be synced at the transition between the base file and the spiralize portion.  It prints fine.

ok thanks for the info. I cant figure out which "fdmprinter.def.json" file I need to alter. There seem to be quite a lot of files with that name.

Set infill 100% can deactivate spiralize mode on a per model settings.

as far as I can tell they took spiralize out of per model settings after 2.5 'so as not to confuse people'. Not necessary if you ask me. Luckily modifying the installation file as discussed above brings it back.
