S5 core seems to be clogged but isn't

Hi!

 

I have a reoccuring problem with multiple of my S5 printers. At first, it seemed that the core was clogged, no material extruded. After cleaning the same problem occured. I checked the feeder and feeder tension. During the material change, material extrudes normally trough the nozzle, but with the first layer, lines get thinner and thinner until no material extrudes and a notification for 'material empty' pops up. It seems that the feeder tries to 'jam' the material into the print core what results in a thickened wire (which makes it harder to pull it out of the core or to change material.

 

Does anyone experienced similar problems and/or know a solution to this problem?

What material are you trying to print and at which temperature?

Which firmware do you have on your S5?

There is/was a bug that the filament is retracted too far after a print and then the print starts without extruding. It helps when you push the filament manually forward at the start of your print. Or install the latest firmware which is actually a step back to the previous one.

@Smithy 5.2.11 is installed. I have multiple printers with 5.2 or 5.4.

 

@TheodorK I am using Ultimaker PLA with recommended settings (205 deg. printing temperature)

 

See the attached picture: the filament seems thickened once it enters the print core.

I suffered exactly from this (UM3), the front fan was dead.

 

Didnt notice at first since side cooling fans and the one to my HEPA filter was running.

If the front fan is dead, like @AndersK mentioned, it would explain all of your problems.

Is the jam happening with both of the printcores?

 

Check the connector on the back of the printhead and check if is is in place propperly, press it down and wiggle it a little (you dont want to break the connector). Then heat a printcore to about 100 degrees (at this point the front fan should definally be spinning), if the front fan still isn't moving, it is probably dead and needs replacement.

Checked & cleaned the fan, seems to have solved the problem.

What was the issue?

Was the fan jammed with some filament stringing or was the connector not propperly connected?

this was exactly my issue.. i will install a fine mesh there.  my nozzle is now clogged/dead..  cant move the stump of filament in there.. hot or cold.  
does anyone have a walk-trough for disassembling and cleaning a S5 nozzle.

I don't recommend to disassemble the print core, it can break easily and even if you can disassemble it, it is hard to get a tight fit again. I would try to heat up the core, open the front door that the fan cannot cool the hot end and try if you can pull out the filament. If you cannot reach something from the top of the core, try it with a needle or a thin wire trough the nozzle.
