Cura Setup Questiion

I am doing an internet buddy a favor. HE has the 3D printer (Anycubic Photon S) but is not that great with PC software so I am helping him out by massaging the source files. Unfortunately, Cura doesn't let me select the Anycubic Photon S  in the printers list (it only knows about the Anycubic 4Max, Chiron and i3Mega). I understand why Cura needs to know what printer it is preparing the file(s) for but since it doesn't already have a preset for the Photon S how do I set it up to slice for one? What are the critical parameters I need to give it as a "custom" printer to let it massage a .STL (.OBJ?) into the set of instructions required to produce a 3D object?

 

While I have your attention, which file type is best to slice; the .OBJ or the .STL?

I may be wrong, but i somehow doubt that Cura is of any use for resin printers. HE should use the slicer that is provided with the printer.

I thought that Cura was for 3D printers period. I guess I need to check your assertion with the publishers. 

 

As for your snotty remark about who should do the slicing ... you need to learn some manners.

I've met tinkergnome in person and I've read hundreds of hist posts.  He is very polite.  I suspect you are reading some intent that is not in his post.  I try to be polite also.

 

The underlined bold part was simply copied from your own post.  I'm not sure if that made you think he was being snarky or something.

 

Tinker is simply trying to be helpful - I'm also pretty sure (80% sure) Cura does not work with any resin printers out there at all.  None.  Tinker and I could be wrong. 

 

For example resin printers have very bizarre (for FDM printers) requirements for support.  You want to never have a large flat side of a part touching the first layer.  Instead it is recommended to tilt the part (not sure how much - at least 20 degrees?) and add these tree-like support structures.  Also there needs to be a base under the tree.  Also make sure you print with 100% infill with resin printers.  I'm sure there are at least 5 other details I know nothing about that make cura incompatible.

There are resin printers that use. Cura, eg the Peopoly Moai. Resin printers that have a laser typically use gcode (which can be produced by Cura), whereas printers that use a (DLP) projector tend to require stacks of images in a way that Cura cannot produce.

Ah.  I stand corrected.  Although the Anycubic Photon S is a DLP printer so it probably doesn't take gcodes.
