Set default directory for .stl files?

Posted · Set default directory for .stl files?

I'm running Cura 5.0.0 on Linux. When I open a new STL file the file picker always starts me off in my home directory. Is there a way to change that? I'd like the file picker to start in some other directory (like where I keep all of my STL files) so I don't have to navigate around so much.

Thanks!

Cura normally stores the last location you opened a 3d model from. However, Cura uses the file dialog provided by the OS, and if that file dialog does not accept the stored last location, then (re)setting that location in cura.cfg will likely not do you any good. So in short: there is no way to change that (other than fixing this slight incompatibility between Cura and your OS)

I second this issue.  Use an environment variable CURA_WORKDIR=xxx, or recent_dir  (vs  recent_files).

Every time I do any kind of file access (open, save, etc) , I have to navigate all over the place.  It also does'nt remember the filename I opened, so saving a slice requires navigating and naming.  I know that sounds petty,   Just a feature request.

@jebradley - what operating system are you using?

Agreed this is infuriating. Also, it only started happening after I upgraded to Cura 5. It used to be normal and convenient on older versions and broke at some point along the way.

Also, Cura shows startup hints every single time.

Sounds like Cura can't write to its configuration file. Which shouldn't be a problem, because it stores its config file in your home directory, usually ~/.local/share/cura/ (and then there's a subdirectory for each version). Make sure your user has read/write permission on cura.cfg. Not sure if various file managers can do it, but open the folder in a terminal and enter the command:

    chmod a+rw cura.cfg

(yes I realise that's giving permission to every account on the system, but in this case a little overkill doesn't hurt)

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
