There's a lot of info on my page about UBOOT because I spent many days getting past that step.  The good news is that you guys don't have any UBOOT issues so skip all that.  There's also tons of info about UBOOT on olimex out there on the internet, lol.  Olimex goes way beyond just Ultimaker printers.

Let's go slow 😉 it's Alot information to take in i'm smart with pc's not with code programming. So i buy a olimex serial cable, i plug in in my pc and the i van flash the UM recovery firmware do the board? Just like the SD but with a screen and more feedback of what is happening on the board

Everytime you boot your olimex it spews out tons of information.  It tells you what OS is booting, what drivers are being installed, what services are starting up.  Also eventually the UM software starts running as well including the recovery programs and it spews out stuff as well to the console.  Every.  Time.  You.  Boot.

Until now that information just goes to those 3 pins and is never observed.

So you leave the SD card in the olimex and power up and look at all that info you have been missing all this time.  That's the first step.  Read it all - look for error messages - try to see where things go badly (usually near the end).  Post the result and let me look at it.

As I explain on the website you will need to connect the other end of the serial cable to a computer such as PC, Mac, Linux and you will need software on that computer to see the output coming from the Olimex board.

Ok i order the cable, what software do i need? on my windows pc.

also i did a thing -_- when i put a screen into the olimex hdmi port and i turn on the printer without the SD in the board, i get the linux logo and this text. looks like nothing is happening 😕

second time i put the SDcard in the olimex and then start de printer up i got this scrambeld lines on my screen.

not sure what to think of this, just maybe wayting after i got the cable.

It's a 3 pin cable.  Not sure what the 4 pin cable does.  I'd just get the official one if it won't take too long.  There are many other cables that work.  They are all called "usb to serial cable" or something like that but some are 5V and some are 3.3V and I'm not sure which you need or if it even matters or if it can damage the olimex or what.

Google can help with that of course: "which serial cables are compatible with olimex lime2?"

As for software - PLEASE READ MY WEBSITE - lol!

Okay I don't mention the software.  I think I used putty?  Or actually I think I used my linux machine.  What operating system do you have?  You need different software for each machine.  Hyperterminal should work if you already have that.  Putty I think will work.  There are probably over 300 programs on the PC that are good terminal programs through a "COM" port (assuming you have a PC.  I'd just google it.  I *do* talk about proper baud rate.  Olimex website also talks about baud rate and how to hook up cables (seemingly backwards as TX connects to RX!).

i got the olimx able, so is the red wire TX and green RX of the other way around?
i got windows 10 64bit, what program do i use forreading the olimex board with the cable?

I ordered a serial to USB cable today and hope I can save some 300 Euros that way.
What software do you use for the serial connection - Arduino?

thanks for your page and the time you invested in solving this particular problem

hi, did you got any luck to fix your UM3 again? i just got my serial cable

I managed to connect the serial cable correctly:
    image.thumb.jpeg.424743054b7c8f20f2e1a392049918c7.jpeg

    Install driver:
    https://www.olimex.com/Products/Components/Cables/USB-Serial-Cable/USB-SERIAL-F/
    (->software: https://www.olimex.com/Products/Components/Cables/USB-Serial-Cable/_resources/win_x86_x64_drivers_usb_cable.zip)

    install putty:
    https://www.putty.org/

    open window in putty:
    image.thumb.png.cf087eaa8214a8aa8fe2c869f96d9863.png
maybe change COM3 to COM1->device manager tells you where the serial USB cable is connected

now you should have a black serial window and you can power up your ultimaker

anyone knows if keyboard works via putty? it does nothing when I connect it.
GR5 - did your keyboard show input when connected or did you connect your keyboard on the board directly?

In putty there should be a window that is spewing out information.  Well before it spits out the sad robot is valuable information.

In putty, once it stops booting, you should be able hit the return key on your keyboard and it should prompt for a username (use root) and/or password (use "ultimaker" typically - also try "root" "password" or lookup on the olimex website what the recovery password is typically but ultimaker setup the root password somehow.

So you can log into debian linux and there are thousands of commands you can do to look around.  But more importantly save *all* of the boot process.

There should be a way in putty to log all output into a file.  If I remember right.  I haven't used putty in about 5 years.  I used to use it every day.

I entered text through putty.  Start with enter key.  If that does nothing then recheck the cabling.

If you plug in a USB cable I think it goes to a different console than the one through putty.  You would need to get the hdmi cable outputing info before plugging in a usb keyboard.  I think.  More information on the olimex  forums.

So here is the relevant error:

    Error: unable to mount '/dev/mmcblk1p2'.

the 1 in blk1 is the SSD on the olimex.  P2 means partition 2.  I talk about this in my unbricking web page.

The latest firmware for UM3 appears to be 5.3.0.  This is very unfortunate!!  The firmware people added code somewhere around 5.7 (for S3, S5, S7 only) that will automatically handle the above error and reformat mmcblk1p2.

So you need to (as a minimum) reformat partition 2 on mmc blk1.  By the way there are more errors shown but we already know the problem is partion 2.

    [   12.102194] F2FS-fs (mmcblk1p2): invalid crc_offset: 64527
    [   12.108183] F2FS-fs (mmcblk1p2): invalid crc_offset: 64527
    [   12.113682] F2FS-fs (mmcblk1p2): Failed to get valid F2FS checkpoint
    [   12.120707] F2FS-fs (mmcblk1p2): invalid crc_offset: 64527

So you need to format the partition.  You will need f2fs.  This is getting more complicated unfortunately but this is 100% the problem and similar to what I expected.  What I didn't realize is that this recovery image is so old - about 5 years old maybe?  And it doesn't have the better recovery code that is in 5.7.X.

Anyway once it finishes printing out the sad robot, it's time to hit the Enter key on your keyboard and try to log in.  If it asks for username and password, username is root and I'm not sure of password.  It might not ask for either - it might be that you are already logged in.

Read the stuff on my web page.  I try to walk you through the steps.  They aren't trivial but not too bad either.  Try to jump right to the f2fs format commands.  Step 5.  If it doesn't know the command it means the f2fs partition code isn't installed.  So you can read about apt-get.  You will need your printer on the internet to use apt-get.  Anyway I'm just repeating what is already written up in the unbricking document.  If step 5 doesn't work go back to step 1, getting the network working so you can use apt-get to get the f2fs formatting ability.

Even once you get f2fs working, it might fail the format command.  Try a few times.  If it won't format you need to repartition.  I talk about that as well.  At least you don't have to install any software to repartition!

I wonder what would happen if you used the S5R1 firmware recovery on the UM3.  Would it repartition and reformat before it notices it's on the wrong hardware?  If that works then you can switch back to the UM3 recovery as the partitions would be all formatted by the S5R1 recovery procedure and the UM3 recovery uSD would now work.  Potentially.

That could be the case, where van i find the S3 of S5 firmware

You may think you want these recovery firmwares here: https://support.makerbot.com/s/article/1877434822572

But they have purposely hidden the S5R1 firmware because the S5R1 printer has deadly exposed voltages near where the uSD goes in so they want you to sign wavers, talk to a human, etc etc.  (all you have to do is keep it unplugged while your fingers are within a meter of the printer) But I have the firmware available on my web page.  And you don't want to use the newer firmwares because UM no longer uses Olimex in the newest printers.

If you read my web page it explains which version of the firmware is too old for the auto-formatting and which version is new enough to have it.

I'd get the oldest version that still has the auto-partitioning which is explained on my web page.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
