Unable to remove material

Hello,

 

Using S5 pro bundle. A TPLA spool is loaded on way 1, in "standby" position a few centimetres above the print head 1. On the screen, the line connecting the material station and the print head is blue. There is absolutely no way to remove the material:

- The appropriate buttons are grayed

- Removing and/or changing the print head don't help

- Rebooting don't help

- Updating the FW don't help

 

I have already mentioned this bug more than one year ago :

This issue happens regularly. Sometime changing the print head help. Sometime not.

Hi @bonelli, thank you for your message. In order to reduce the amount of times filament passes all the feeders traveling up and down all the way, we have configured the firmware in such a way that when your print is finished the filament will wait above your print head until your next print. So when your next print is the same material (often people print most with one type of material) it saves time and distance traveled. When you select a different material, it should retract and make room for the new material. 

 

I don't see changing material via the menu as one of the options you have tried, have you? Perhaps it is not a bug, but a misunderstood feature. Hope this helps!

Hi @bonelli. When the Unload option is not enabled in the material menu it means that the "Standby" state could not be properly stored or was lost due to another action.
Can you describe if you perform any actions in between prints that could result in that state being lost? Some examples that come to mind would be: Shutting the printer down before the printer has finished the cool down routine, switching printcores, updating firmware...

Unfortunately "changing material" is not an action that can be manually performed with the Pro Bundle. There are some tricks that you could use to unload the material in that case:
- Raise the feeder lever and power cycle the printer. During the boot-up routine the Material Station should unload the material back. (Don't forget to put th elever down again once this is finished)

- Start a print-core change wizard. That should trigger a new deprime procedure and put the material back into that "standby" position again. At that moment you should be able to see the "Unload" functionality enabled in the material Menu again

I actually have understood the feature. The TLPA was loaded on core 1. I want to reprint a previous job printed 1 month ago. The file is still present on the USB key and use TLPA on core 2. I don't want to re-process the original file on Cura. A 10k€ printer with a material stations should be able to remove a material on a core and load it on the other core.

 

It should always be possible to remove a material in a standby position in in all cases at anytime. There is just something like a missing QPushButton.setEnabled(true). User may need to replace a pretty-empty spool by a new one before a new print, stock the spool elsewheere, use the spool on another printer or whatever else without raising a support ticket because the UNLOAD button is not available.

 

AMHA, after 5 days idle, the printer should have unloaded the material for long-term storage in the dried material station.

That is correct. I think I may have misunderstood your initial message after reading your response. It will retract automatically after a certain set of hours. And if you wish to trigger this sooner manually via the menu or button, you should also be able to. If you can not, @ccr90 described some scenarios that could be the reason of this, and how to work around them.

It doesn't work every time. I'm helping a colleague to print a small part, we are trying to print it since 5 days. There is still no firmware update to resolve this issue. We may have reboot the S5  20+ times and loose meters of material and hours.

 

ER58=>ER34=>58=>34=>x=>y=>z ... The filament is still blocked in the printhead, we cannot remove it, we cannot do nothing. Maybe a hammer will do a better job than hoping a new software release that really solve the problems we have regularly since the beginning.

 

We are doing a lot with local fablab and science events. Be sure we will do the best advertisement you deserves.

I would like to second this, as it has been a source of great frustration for us in a number of cases. For example, being locked out of unloading a spool when an NFC spool errantly thinks itself as out even when more than half the material remains.

Same problem here. Unable to unload material "Material Spool is empty" but it's not.
Unable to unload or use the bay.
Manual unload in case normal operation fails should always be an option.

This issue usually points to 2 possible root causes..

• Front fan on print head is clogged up or not spinning at required speed.

I run into this all the time now on our S5 Pro bundle  (it didn't used to happen). What usually occurs is a print finishes (or a spool change needs to happen mid print), but rather than heating up the print head  and then unloading the material the printer tries to unload the material when it is at about 100°C. Obviously it can't do this which causes it to error and then wait until somebody comes along to run the material failed to unload wizard.

 

And yes we have gone in and made sure the standby temperatures on the materials is high enough to allow the material to unload. But the printer seems to ignore it and still uses a much lower standby temp.
