S5 feeders grind

Hi,

I have recently started a new job for a company with 2 S5 printers and cabinets. Both these machine seem to have the same to issues, when the tension is centred the feeders grind badly and at any tension the motors for the extruders make a loud noise. I have managed to get one out of 4 to work properly by cleaning the print cores however this doesn't seem to fix the other 3 feeders. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

"with cabinets".  Does that mean you have the material station because if so then that complicates things a lot.

If not then there is a quick test you can do.  I don't know if this works with the MS or not but it works without the MS.  Go into the middle menu on the left and then click on the upper area where they show the filament types for left and right side. Pick one.  Then click on the "..." in the upper right corner and choose "MOVE".  Then retract the filament until you see it in the bowden and then move it forward a little (keeping so you can see the end of the filament) and fight the filament with one hand below the feeder while turning the dial to move the filament forwards.  The feeder can pull up to about 15 pounds max.  10 pounds or 4kg of pulling power I would consider passing.  5 pounds of pulling power will print okay but I would consider that broken.

Yes sorry I meant material station, both machines worked without the station however we need them to work with them. I was fiddling around with the newer machine yesterday and have got it to print for about 10 minutes however print core 1 inevitably blocks up. I tried cleaning then re-running the machine twice however am now receiving a new issue with print core one. the cabinet believes that the is no material in the spool, I have a new and keep getting either that message or a message to load material into print core one, which with material station is seemingly impossible.

    *Update,

I Read online a suggestion to turn the flow sensor off to fix the issue, I gave it a go and am now having motion control errors over and over again. I have tried turning the flow sensors back on however am now unable to traverse the menu as every time I close the error it pops back up. I will now stop touching until suggestions are given as it seems either electrical or software related, and I don't wont to make it any worst.

I'd contact your reseller.  They should be able to support you.

Can you say exactly which motion errors you are getting?  they have numbers and a web page like for example "ER65" which would then be explained in detail at ultimaker.com/ER65

I'm not getting any error code or the usually link to the website, I'll take a photo and upload it for you.

Ah.  Yes.  Sometimes I'm glad I don't have the material station.  Definitely talk to your reseller.  I definitely don't know what to do with these.  There's a good chance you will learn to take the MS apart and clean something in there and put it back together.  I don't think it's very complicated or difficult but I know very little about this.

I'm not sure how support works these days but you can also create a support ticket and someone from UM will hopefully get back to you.

in upper right corner of this page, click the 9 dots then choose support then in the line above the banner (top of web page above banner) click "submit a request".  Include the 2 photos you just posted above.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
