Hi there,

In order to gain a better understanding of how our users use their Ultimaker 3D printers, we would like to ask you a few questions. In particular about what materials and reels you use. It would be greatly appreciated if you had a few minutes to spare and could answer these questions.

We will use this information to improve future products.

For some extra motivation and to make it worth your while, one (randomly selected) respondent will get a free reel of Ultimaker filament of your choice at the end of April!

So the questions below are about the type of filament and reels you use. If you use different filament brands with different dimensions, feel free to answer it more than once.

A: What is the filament brand:

B: What is the type of filament:

C: What is the diameter of the filament:

D: What is the weight of a full spool:

E: What is the inner diameter of the core?

F: What is the outer diameter of the core?

G: What is the outer diameter of the whole spool?

H: What is the weight of an empty spool?

I: Width of full spool (only when it is completely full because it can expand)

J: Width of an empty spool (only when almost or completely empty)

This image might give you some more information about what we mean with some of the questions:

Thank you very much for helping us get a better understanding of your workflow.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask below! Have a good day.

Thank you for your help @eyeballs

I suppose it is clear what we're asking with 'H'? When you have finished your reel of filament, feel free to edit your answer and fill in the weight of an empty spool. Thanks.

    1. Most of the time (80%):

A: What is the filament brand: colorFabb

B: What is the type of filament: PLA/PHA (various colors)

C: What is the diameter of the filament: 2.85mm

D: What is the weight of a full spool: ca. 1kg (=750g filament + empty spool)?   (I have no balance available for this weight)

E: What is the inner diameter of the core? 53mm

F: What is the outer diameter of the core? 105mm

G: What is the outer diameter of the whole spool? 200mm

H: What is the weight of an empty spool? ca. 300g ?  (my balance goes to 250g, and it is slightly more)

I: Width of full spool (only when it is completely full because it can expand) 56mm (= empty +1mm)

J: Width of an empty spool (only when almost or completely empty) 55mm

    2. Occasionally (10%):

A: What is the filament brand: Ultimaker

B: What is the type of filament: PLA (pearl) (old model of spools, no chip yet)

C: What is the diameter of the filament: 2.85mm

D: What is the weight of a full spool: ca. 1kg ?

E: What is the inner diameter of the core? 52mm

F: What is the outer diameter of the core? ca. 104mm? (no empty one available now)

G: What is the outer diameter of the whole spool? 200mm

H: What is the weight of an empty spool? (no one available now)

I: Width of full spool (only when it is completely full because it can expand) (no one available now)

J: Width of an empty spool (only when almost or completely empty) ca. 54mm

    3. Occasionally (9%):

A: What is the filament brand: ICE

B: What is the type of filament: PET (various colors)

C: What is the diameter of the filament: 2.85mm

D: What is the weight of a full spool: ca. 1kg

E: What is the inner diameter of the core? 52mm

F: What is the outer diameter of the core? 105mm

G: What is the outer diameter of the whole spool? 199mm

H: What is the weight of an empty spool? -- (don't have one now)

I: Width of full spool (only when it is completely full because it can expand) 53mm

J: Width of an empty spool (only when almost or completely empty) ca. 53...53mm ? (don't have one available now)

    4. Seldom (1%):

A: What is the filament brand: colorFabb

B: What is the type of filament: NGEN

C: What is the diameter of the filament: 2.85mm

D: What is the weight of a full spool: rest of the data: see colorFabb PLA/PHA (same spools)

    Main spool differences:

    - inner core diameter 52mm (Ultimaker and ICE spools) / 53mm (colorFabb)

    - Ultimaker (old) and ICE spools have spokes / colorFabb spools have a free ring on outer edge (=easier to make filament clamps slide around edge)

    - rest seems fairly "standard spool"

Thanks @jimbo . Did you print the spoolholders yourself? Was it to save some space or did you not like the original placement?

The original placement is not quite convenient for second spool changing (you must unload first spool)

Also 2.3kg spools are too big and don't fit between holder and table (they are also too wide for the original holder)

    I started with 130mm universal filament spool holder - multiple lengths by ther00t ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2459115 )

I designed and printed arms for these holders. They have series of holes to put a rubber band that works as brake (friction is too low and spools unwind themselves)

@tomnagelOops.  I had posted radius.  Fixed.  I will update empty weight when I have an empty spool.

      • S-Line Firmware 8.3.0 was released Nov. 20th on the "Latest" firmware branch.
(Sorry, was out of office when this released)

        This update is for...
        All UltiMaker S series
        New features

Temperature status. During print preparation, the temperatures of the print cores and build plate will be shown on the display. This gives a better indication of the progress and remaining wait time. Save log files in paused state. It is now possible to save the printer's log files to USB if the currently active print job is paused. Previously, the Dump logs to USB option was only enabled if the printer was in idle state. Confirm print removal via Digital Factory. If the printer is connected to the Digital Factory, it is now possible to confirm the removal of a previous print job via the Digital Factory interface. This is useful in situations where the build plate is clear, but the operator forgot to select Confirm removal on the printer’s display. Visit this page for more information about this feature.
