  1. Community Contest, part 5 | The tribute

"The introduction of the first 3D printer into the Integrated Product Design studio made a tremendous difference to our program. It used to take students days or even weeks to complete a single prototype. With access to a 3D printer, students were able to create a design and hold it in their hands the next day. The original Ultimaker was working non-stop with students literally camping out in the studio to start a new print as soon as the last one was done. Students were able to rapidly iterate on their design ideas and the final projects were noticeable more polished than any of the previous cohorts. Now of course, we have an entire wall of Ultimaker printers including the new Ultimaker 2 Extended but the original Ultimaker is still there printing away."

  2. Full Metal Marvin

    Hi all,

last weekend I printed three Marvins: 1x Bronzefill, 1x Brassfill and 1x Copperfill. After printing they were pre-polished for approx. 8 hours in my self designed rocktumbler and finished with a buff wheel. Not perfect yet, but the result is ok for a first try
The lesson I have learned is that I have to print finer layers to make polishing easier - will try it soon.

  3. 3D Printed Speakers

We're a class of students (Im the teacher) from New Zealand. We used our Ultimaker 2 to create a speaker. Students made the MDF Box frame for Woodwork (students were 11-13 years old) and we had a kit set power unit. We used the 3D Speakers for the printing of Speaker Covers, handles and feet for the speakers. Each student print approx 100 hours of printing for the project, after designing the originals on Tinkercad. You can view the projects on our blog of student created work: 3dprintschool.blogspot.com

  10. 3D knife handle

    3D Printing experimental composite.
I printed the frame in black ABS on my Ultimaker 2 in a collaboration with a knife maker John Arnold. The yellow is epoxy and the scales were machined and finished by John to the knife frame. Knife Gallery
I was after a clean, razor-sharp contrast between yellow and black that can't currently be obtained using dual extruder heads. I normally vacuum-infuse epoxy into 3D prints to drastically increase overall strength and stiffness (water-tight hydraulic fittings and other engineering applications), but it was used in this way for a striking, alternative look.

  11. Ultimaker 2 Filament Guide Final (with cleaner/oiler)

Filament Guide for Ultimaker 2 - Final version
This guide is used when the spool is rotated by 90 degrees behind the printer. The 90 degree rotation can be usefull to force the filament ripples of the extruder to the side of the bowden and PTFE coupler. This mod helped me to get rid of a lot of underextrusions as the friction of the ripples inside the PTFE coupler was very high.
    You need:
M3x14 and a washer to mount the base to the UM2 below the extruder. This replaces an original screw of the left motor covers.
A M5x20 with a nut to fix the arm at the base plate.
A 606 ball bearing to keep the wheel moving
    Assembly:
Press the ball bearing in the wheel an click it on the arm.
Fix the arm with the M5 screw at the base plate in the desired angle.
Remove the original motor cover screw from your UM2 and mount the FilaGuide with the new screw and the washer instead.
Fill the cleaner/oiler block with your cleaning/oiling material and push the filament through the holes.

  15. a petanque measurement tool

I have been digging into the intriguing petanque culture for a bit and came up with this simple measurement tool.
You'll need this object and a piece of string (lenghth depending how far you want to measure) and some tape/pearls.
Print out the object and place the string inside the hole in the center.
put some tape (or a small pearl) on every end so that it prevents from detaching.
When you come to the rather amusing occasional controversy ensues with regards to the assessment of distances between the boules and the cochonnet (but), simply pull out the string on top, put the object on top of the but, and start measuring the distances.

  24. Star Wars Episode VII Millennium Falcon

This is my 3d model and printed Millennium Falcon from Starwars VII, and I used the trailer for reference to help modelled on 3ds Max. I printed using Ultimaker 2. Also, you can print the bigger size and high resolution from the stl file, and photos are the low res, therefore you can have the option to print in different size/resolution print.
