  1. Update about the Pi camera module. (And maybe other cameras) one issue I have not been able to solve to my satisfaction is that many of these web cams type hardware can not focus on close objects (like if you were to mount the camera inside the frame) and do not have good depth of field, so much of your print will be out of focus. My dream set up would be camera inside the frame (and add LEDs to my UMO+ for nice lighting even when the basement lights are turned off) with a depth of field so the whole platform would in I focus, software would be making a time lapse and live streaming via web page. I think the octoprint on the Pi is the software that fits my dream set up, but finding the right camera is something I have not been able to do...or even the right lens to add to an off the shelf web cam or Pi cam.
  2. I guess I never noticed that. thanks for showing my the logic behind the naming, sorry I did not understand that. So I am suggesting a radical new way of thinking for the future.
  3. --Edit---- please ignore this post, I am a dork, I see now Cura has always used a consistent version by date of release. I'm withdrawing this suggestion, Sorry. :( I'll show my self out now. ------------ @SandervG thanks for the reply, while not actually answering my question, you did seem to indicate you hear some of what we're saying which was refreshing. Thank you! In the hopes that you're still listening can I please give you some more common sense input, which is not meant to be harsh but talks about some very important practices that I'm concerned are causing some of the current trouble UM is in. YES! I love CURA, BUT...This statement is only true of the Pre-15.06.x Cura. Please keep that in mind. I'm feeling that your actions are smacking of marketing B.S. The answer to this is right in the versioning naming conventions that are universally understood by most everyone (except maybe marketing people and people who have never used software--sorry but in the vacuum of info and answers my mind is left to theorize on what the heck is going on). By your own words you did a ground up change, the frame work has changed, the plug-ins have to be re-written, the UI is different, the slicing algorithms are different, etc. You signify a major release such as this by increment the front number..... Cura 16.xx.x Don't take my word for it here's a blurb from wikipedia "In principle, in subsequent releases, the major number is increased when there are significant jumps in functionality such as changing the framework which could cause incompatibility with interfacing systems, the minor number is incremented when only minor features or significant fixes have been added, and the revision number is incremented when minor bugs are fixed." SO why did Cura 15.06.x get released as such? it should have been Cura 16.xx.x which EVERYONE would have understood to be a major upgrade, instead we have "Legacy Cura" and "New Cura" ..terms which hopefully are just descriptors you choose yesterday while typing, since your post was the 1st time I've seen them used. And these are terms that are not very helpful moving forward into the future since there is already an accepted and universally understood way to easily communicate these types of changes. By ignoring standard naming conventions we end up with such confusing lineages as iPad1>iPad2>New iPad(3)>New New iPad(4)>Air iPad(5)>Air2 iPad(6) So if you really are thinking about the future (and not short term flash in pan buzz words) you should follow the naming conventions everyone uses and STICK TO THEM. OK, just for illustration purposed, not meant to insult the good people at UM ..What will we call Cura17 when that time comes...Cura 360? lol Anyway, I am so happy to have UM and Cura, I am a convert I tell everyone to use UM and CURA, but please please spare us this kind of confusing and arbitrary naming and stick to a system that quickly, without explanation and elegantly lets everyone know (even 10 years from now) what the differences between version are. please I know you might not want to go back but at least don't do 15.10 do 16.x.x In the long run this would be the thing to do, AND might not make it look like you're trying to dupe people by using the quality of the aforementioned cura 15.x.x. line to download your newly build from the ground up cura that has very little to do with the 15.x.x line of product. If my options are not in line with your board of director's thinking can you at least help us with some honest open communications about the thought process and the deliberate choices to flaunt convention?
  4. After all that discussion, 'A new release will come shortly' it's the answer? {....} what's the purpose behind all this. If you make a beta, it's a beta, plain and clear. If you make a beta forum, it's a beta and you don't kill the working version until EVERY feature it's working on the new version. On cura the tale it's the same. Will Ultimaker 3 be the same? Thanks for moving this thread to there, I helped hickjack that thread (sorry) and was debating on starting a new thread in CURA to ask (once again) a straight forward question in the hopes of getting a straight forward answer. So far I'm very disappointed in the lack of communication. So in the void of answers to basic questions we are left to theorize on what is going on and why at UM. I don't want to play a guessing game of why everything has gone down hill so fast at UM, I want you to tell us. @SandervG here's just one question from the many that have been ask, it's very narrow in scope and should not be hard to answer. With regards to the latest CURA misrepresentation and resulting hit on UM brand's reputation which has been going on for two months and counting... Why is UM not correcting the fact that they are deliberately and knowingly sabotaging their own brand by ignoring the issue and refusing to make very simple changes (as listed in the hijacked post listed above)?!?? thanks and please know I love UM and am asking from a place of great concern and feeling of worry that the ship is not being steered away from the cliff. SOS...SOS.....
  5. I have use these two things so far. 1. YawCam, computer, usb web cam, Avidemux - I have yawcam put the images in a folder and them make the time lapse with Avidemux 2.OctoPrint, Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Camera Module there's a few examples in this playlist of yawcam...I have not got around to uploading and octoprint vids.
  6. Ok..so...what's the reasoning in continuing to leave your mistake up for over two months now? Honestly are you telling me it's too hard to do any or all of the following: 1. Change the link on the Cura main page back to the stable 15.04.2 2. Put a notice right on the page for the cura download saying something like "15.06.x is still in beta, see older versions link for the stable version" 3. Put some notice on the "which cura is right for me" page that explains the status, and while I'm mentioning that page.....really shouldn't that page cover more that one version?? the title seems to indicate you're sharing info about different versions and informing people as to which version to choose, BUT it only talks about 15.06.x as it fails to mention known issues. This page basically add insult to injury, by continuing to hold up the facade that 15.06.x is a trust worthy good thing that everyone should be using. As so wonderfully described here ....(paraphrase) when you make a mistake say so and fix it. That video should be mandatory and compulsory viewing for every one at UM. Doesn't anyone at UM understand the damage that's being done every single day that page stays that way? Just looking for an answer I can understand from my beloved UM, at least someone help us out with that much.
  7. We are going into our 3rd year now, those kids were from the 2nd year. We have learned a TON! kids love 3D printing, you can get at so much math and other technology ideas when the carrot at the end is their own 3D printed object. You can look over some of our slides from two presentation we did at the 2015 US NSTA STEM conference , here http://tinyurl.com/kxseykr
  8. Well, I've been pretty straight forward with regards to what the new version of cura is; A beta. Yes and I applaud you and the great work you're doing in this forum, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! BUT still would like to point out respectfully : 1. The Beta is the only link that is listed on the CURA download page. 2. All other software developers usually label the name of the download as beta. i.e Cura-15.06.X-BETA 3. Nowhere in the cura download page does it say beta. 4. Nowhere on the "which cura is right for me" page does it mention a beta status OR even a list of known issues, just raves about how great it is. 5. Nowhere in the initial fan fair forum posts about the new cura was the beta status mentioned. 6. Users would download what they thought was the best version, and them be shocked about the lack of even basic functionality and they would get answers like "oh yeah, we're working on that" or "yep you found another bug, thanks". 7. Users who UN-knowingly download beta software are not happy since they lose time, and possibly plastic, and lose trust for the brand. 8. Users who knowingly download beta software and happy to help debug and improve the product. I am trying to respectfully and constructively point out the recent (last year) direction that UM has been choosing for their communication about products and upgrades. I've mentioned this before in other posts that I love UM and am a huge advocate for them in my area, BUT I fear for the future since they (knowingly or not) are eroding their brand's name and reputation for quality.
  9. Like I said, I love the idea, and I see that it's PET and ABS only at the moment. So what's the logic behind the choice of images in the article you linked to above? There is a photo of several spools of plastic with a large sign above reading "PLA" the caption below the photo says "Perpetual Plastic's recycled filament".
  10. Love the idea, but i think they are overselling with comments like reused plastic is the same a new. At least for PLA the properties change a bit if you put it through several heating cycles or if it's been in the environment soaking up water from the air, etc. Also AFAIK the home extruders still can not match the precision tolerances of filament you buy from a reputable company. and good tolerances on filament is important to good prints. Still love the idea and the message of keeping plastic out of the waste stream. But maybe they should be pointing out the limitations of this concept and inviting people to work on improving in these areas.
  11. Hi, this area was looking empty, so here's a post that was in art of printing (before we had an educational area). We're doing a good amount of 3D printing with our K-7th graders at our small school. Here's a link to a local cable access news show. We have three printers Ultimaker Original, MakerGear M2, and Ultimaker Original+ ...there is a shot of the UM at the end. Enjoy! http://www.publicmedianet.org/blog/k12-comstock3d
  12. neat idea, thanks of posting. I might try this this winter, I usually have more issues during the cold months.
  13. I've been printing with ColorFabb for about a year (I have tried ~10 colors-love them all) on my UMO and it's great. Depending on the color I'm printing 190-200 at 0.2 layer and speed between 30-50mm/s If you want to go faster maybe increase that temp to 210. So a lot cooler that normal PLA. I use a basic temp test print with each new color I get which helps me decide what temp to print at. which reminds me I should post that somewhere.
  14. CURA 15.06.x is beta, buggy, and limited in functionality at the moment. Download 15.04.2 if you just want good gcode and no adventures. Not sure why the insistence on not letting people know about the state of the new cura, maybe they just want as many beta testers as possible. Also they want bugs reported on the github site, since that's the best way to track issues and let them fix them.
  15. I usually print a bunch if these, and put them on pipe stem cleaners for the stem. https://www.youmagine.com/designs/drooloop-flowers-customizable There are some medium trumpet flowers that print 4 at a time gcode files that I use. They are easy to take off the build platform I just keep running those jobs. the trumpet flowers are also tall enought that you could do some custom gcode to have the print head kick them off the bed and print more. So you can let the machine run with a bucket on one side to catch the flowers as they literally fly off the machine.
  16. Version 1.0

    1,717 downloads

I made this using openSCAD. Download the file and make your own brushes. More details at the design link.
  17. Ok, so maybe I am not crazy and this post was not migrated, is there a "lost post" area or person we should alert. I also noticed a lost "guest blog" entry from the old site which I thought would be migrated to "stories" and I let @sandervg know about mid June 2015. so far I'm not sure where these items fall on the priority list since they are making bigger improvements still on this site.
  18. I am having trouble finding this post in the new forum. Neither the built in search or google seems to be able find it here. I am able to see a mention of the thread by the author in another thread, but that is all. http://oldforum.ultimaker.com/index.php?/topic/5093-how-to-setup-print-speed-temperature-and-layer-height/ is what I'm looking for. If anyone can shed some light on this or let me know if there is a better method of finding the relocated content I would be grateful.
  19. I hope this is on the list for notification fixes , but I thought I would point it out to be safe. When a post receives a "like" the system appears to be generating two(2) notifications. One for the "like" and a second saying there has been a "reply". The second "reply" notification is misleading since no new reply is there for anyone to read, this notification should not be generated, only the 1st notification that there was a "like". I think this might be causing some of the ghost notifications? I only saw both notes because it was my post that got liked, if someone else's post received a like I would probably only see the "reply" notification and if I went to the forums I would not see any new content. See Image below:
  20. Wow, very good! This should be mandatory viewing for everyone at Ultimaker, especially minutes 8:30 to 11:00. You hit the nail on the head over and over again. Thanks. I feel like with the new CURA we are seeing the same mistakes you highlighted about how poorly the new forum was handled. I'm very worried for my beloved UM company repeating the same mistakes so close together in time.
  21. I share a lot of these feelings (sadness, frustration, fear, loss) , my forum activity has gone way down for all the same reasons pointed within days of the new forum coming on line, and still have not been fixed many months later. And most alarming the bugs and missing functionality were BASIC features that any forum should have, the fact that it got rolled out in that state is alarming for many, many reasons. Now we've got a bug filled and reduced functionality version of CURA being released, not good, not good at all. At least leave the last stable version listed 1st in the download area and list the new one as a beta download until some of the basic bugs get worked out, this is harming newbies for sure. I used to be on here daily. I run workshops for schools to assemble UMO+ kits and as an ambassador and someone who was drinking the kool-aid, I used to tell them how great the community forums was and what a "together" company UM was...but since the changes I'm not feeling that as strongly anymore. What causes me the most fear about the health of UM is the embarrassing lack of professionalism and quality that I used to admire and brag on. This is the single most telling factor that there is trouble in Denmark ... ops I meant the Netherlands. I am still drinking the kool-aid and loving UM but feeling a lot of doubt and concern for the future. UM please get your act together, and soon, it's important.
  22. that's it. when the infill is printed 1st (default for >15.01, and only user modifiable post 15.04) then you get the horrible surface bumps. When the infill is printed last like 14.xx and lower the surface looks good. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to minimize these retraction blobs. Guess I'll stick with 14.12.1 for the time being.
  23. Pardon me, but I respectful ask ,,, How was this set as the best answer? I thought I was supposed to be able to pick the answer for the questions I post? Another strange issue (kind funny) is that I did not even get a notification that this question was answered? Please unflag your post as the best answer. I think the answer may be my most recent post 7-22-15. thanks
  24. OK finally got time to look at this again. I'm thinking my issues are resulting from how CURA generates retractions. Some where after CURA 14.12.1 this must have been changed. see the images below of the same object with same settings. So I guess my solution is to stick with CURA 14.12.1 for now.
  25. from your photo looks like: I've been having all sorts of issues with these retraction blobs, I've just today had a chance to look back into this and I am convinced it's all due to 15.X making bad gcode for me. Even with 3 outer shells the blobs still show through. The crazy blobs started post 14.12.1 I would try downloading CURA 14.12.1 and see if they magically go away. (I have not tried 15.06.x since it's seems very buggy at the moment) here's some photos
